Igneous Rocks of Montana. There are three basic categories of rocks - sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. The most common type of rock found at the surface in the eastern two-thirds of Montana is sedimentary (sandstones, shales, limestone, etc.). Western Montana has the best variety, with each type present in different areas. The volcanic rocks of the Bearpaw Mountains are part of the Montana high-potassium province, emplaced through Archaean rocks of the Wyoming Craton between 54 and 50 Ma ago.

The geology of Montana includes thick sequences of Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks overlying ancient Archean and Proterozoic crystalline basement rock. Eastern Montana has considerable oil and gas resources, while the uplifted Rocky Mountains in the west, which resulted from the Laramide orogeny and other tectonic events have locations with metal ore. The Cenozoic igneous province of the northern Black Hills uplift appears to represent the easternmost exposure of rocks formed by Tertiary alkalic igneous activity that occurred in the north central and northwestern United States (i.e., Highwood Mountains and Northern Crazy Mountains, Central Montana; Leucite Hills, Wyoming).

The Allendale Lake stock is a representative intrusion of the Eocene alkaline igneous province in south-central British Columbia (Canada), which forms the northwestern edge of the Montana-Wyoming.

This trip examines a variety of mid-Eocene alkalic (feldspathoidal) stocks, laccoliths, sills, and dikes emplaced into Cretaceous and Paleozoic sedimentary strata.

These rocks include mafic and felsic varieties, and are both texturally and compositionally variable. Most of the mafic alkalic rocks are unique in the Montana Alkalic Province in having Na2O > K2O.

Syndicate Pit (Butte, southwestern Montana, USA) - exposure of jointed Butte Quartz Monzonite (76 Ma, Late Cretaceous) with an intruding aplite dike (lower right of photo to under my knees). Aplite is a finely-crystalline intrusive igneous rock having a granitic composition.

Pb/Pb versus Pb/Pb model ages using Shonkin Sag data and published analyses for magmas of the Cenozoic Wyoming-Montana alkaline province (WYMAP) provide evidence of an Archean age for the.
